I can't believe we're already in the second week of school. Last week was pretty hectic with Tropical Storm Fay paying us a visit. Despite that, we managed to learn our classroom procedures, create a volcano, celebrate a birthday, and get to know one another a little better. But now that we're in our second week, we are in the full swing of third grade. We started our Math unit this week covering Number Sense. The are learning the standard, word, and expanded forms of numbers. There will be a test on Friday covering this week's concepts. Additionally, we introduced our first spelling unit. Weekly homework went home Monday and will be returned no later than Friday.
The kids are doing fabulously, and I am amazed at their fun spirits, kind hearts, and eager minds. Every day is a new adventure!!
I don't want to make mention of one thing...CELL PHONES! I am amazed at the amount of third grade students that have cell phones. I understand why some children have cell phones in their possession, however...under no circumstance are they to be turned on or visible during school hours. I would appreciate your full cooperation concerning this matter. It is extremely distracting to have a student's cell phone ring during class. Therefore, please remind your student to have his/her cell phone turned off by the time they arrive at school. They may turn them on after the 3:00 bell. If there is an emergency, student/family contact can be made by contacting the school's office.
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!!
Unbelievable that a new school year is already here. The summer seemed to fly by. Your child will be working hard this year learning to become a successful and responsible student in addition to learning all the skills neccessary to master the FCAT. Be patient with the amount of work they will be bringing home; it will be worth it in the end!
This is an important year in your child's life. They will show tremendous growth emotionally, physically and academically. There will be times they become frustrated and feel overwhelmed during the first few months. Don't worry; they will overcome their frustration and begin to feel a sense of pride in all they will have accomplished. You will be amazed at how much your child will learn and master. Celebrate with them!
We will begin our year as follows:
1. Math - students will learn the value of numbers up to the hundred thousands, master addition and subtraction (with regrouping), multiplication, and simple division
2. Reading - students will learn strategies to improve reading comprehension
3. Writing - students will learn how to write to an expository prompt
4. Social Studies - students will learn about the seven continents and various countries within the continent
5. Science - students will learn what plants and animals need to grow
